How Much Does a Car Service Cost? A Plain Guide

The honest answer to car service cost is that it depends on what your car needs, but that is not much use when you are trying to budget. So let us give you real ranges and explain what actually moves the price up or down.

This post walks through what a full service covers versus an interim one, why the cheapest quote is not always the cheapest in the end and how to keep your warranty happy. It is written the way we would explain it stood next to your car in the workshop.

What actually makes up the cost

A service price is really two things added together, parts and labour. Parts means the oil, filters, plugs and anything else the schedule calls for and labour is the time it takes to do the job properly. A small petrol hatchback needs less oil and cheaper filters than a big diesel or a performance car, so the same service can vary a fair bit between vehicles.

The other big factor is what oil your car takes. Modern low viscosity synthetic oils are dearer than older grades and some engines hold five litres while others hold eight, so oil alone can swing the bill. This is why we always want to know the exact car before we quote.

Interim, full and major, what you get

An interim service is the lighter one, usually oil and filter plus a set of safety checks, and it suits high mileage drivers who want a top up of protection between full services. A full service goes further with more filters, a deeper inspection and more items replaced or checked, and for most people once a year is the sensible choice.

A major service adds the longer life items that only come round every few years, things like spark plugs, brake fluid or a cabin filter depending on the schedule. It costs more on the day but it spreads those bigger jobs out so you are not hit with them all at once.

Nine times out of ten the dear part of a service is not the labour, it is the oil the engine actually needs, and skimping on that is a false economy.

Why the cheapest is not always the cheapest

A rock bottom price often means the bare minimum, cheap oil, a budget filter and a quick once over. That can be fine, but if it skips the inspection you lose the early warning that catches a worn brake or a weeping hose before it becomes a breakdown. If a service does turn something up, our mechanical repairs and car diagnostics crews in Scunthorpe can put it right in the same visit.

We would rather do it once and do it right. A good service is partly the oil and filter and partly the second pair of eyes going over your car, and that inspection is where the real value sits.

Here is a rough guide to how the three service levels compare on cover, price and how often you need them.

ServiceTypical priceHow often
Interim£60 to £120Every 6 months or 6k miles
Full£120 to £250Every 12 months or 12k miles
Major£250 to £450Every 2 to 3 years

Keeping your warranty and your stamps

You do not have to use a main dealer to protect a manufacturer warranty. Under block exemption rules an independent garage can service your car and keep the warranty valid as long as we follow the correct schedule and fit parts that match the required standard, which is exactly what we do.

We stamp your service book or update your digital record so your history stays clean, which matters when you come to sell. You get main dealer standard work without the main dealer price, and everything in writing.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a basic car service?

An interim service on a small petrol car usually starts around 60 to 120 pounds, but the exact figure depends on the oil and filters your car takes. We need the car in front of us to give you a firm price.

Is a full service worth it every year?

For most drivers yes. Once a year keeps the oil fresh, the filters clean and gives us a proper look over the car so small problems get caught early.

Will servicing with you void my warranty?

No. As long as we follow the manufacturer schedule and fit the correct standard of parts your warranty stays valid, and we stamp your book to prove it.

Why is a diesel service more than a petrol one?

Diesels often hold more oil, take pricier filters and can have extra items like a fuel filter, so the parts cost more even though the labour is similar.

Do you quote before you start work?

Always. You get a clear breakdown of parts and labour up front, and if we find anything extra on the ramp we ring you before touching it.
